Many video DIY fans complain at Yahoo Answers saying they can’t get songs or videos (movies) downloaded from Apple iTunes store to Windows Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker, or Adobe Premiere (Pro) for editing. This post will aid to solve this problem.

Firstly, I’d like to look at the cause of failing to import iTunes music and movies to the three video editing software.

Windows Movie Maker (WMM) and Windows DVD Maker (WDM) are two easy and free video editing tools coming with Windows operating system. The WMM and WDM support .ASF, .AVI, .WMV, and .MPEG input video format as well as .MP3, .WAV, .SND, .AU, .AIF, .AIFC and .AIFF input audio format.

Adobe Premiere is a professional and paid video editing program software, therefore, the range of input video & audio format it supports is larger than the WMM and WDM, including 20+ video formats such as .3GP, .MTS/M2TS, .DV, .AVI, .ASF, .MOV, .MP4, etc. and 10+ audio formats such as .AAC, .ASND, .M4A, .WMA, .WAV, .MP3, etc. The latest version of Adobe Premiere is the Pro CS6.

Now, let’s see the formats of the commercial media stuff at iTunes store. Apple use the DRM-covered .M4V to encode all paid video contents (movies, music videos, and TV-shows), meanwhile, parts of songs and all audiobooks at iTunes store are also formatted in the DRM-protected .M4P and .M4B formats. But, the Microsoft WMM/WDM and Adobe Premiere (Pro) lack the authority to read the DRM-protected iTunes videos and audios. That’s why when you tried to put an iTunes purchased audio or video file into WMM, WDM or Adobe Premiere, your computer would say its empty.

In order to let the WMM/WDM/Adobe Premiere recognize the media files bought from iTunes store, we will have to strip the DRM restrictions on such protected files with a third party DRM removal application. One good option is the Aimersoft DRM Media Converter. This application has the ability to make the iTunes purchased videos and audios converted into Non-DRM version through re-recording the original files. This application is simple to use: add DRMed iTunes media files, choose a correct conversion profile and convert. Anyone who are interested in it can directly download it here, or learn more about this DRM removal application from its product page.

P.s. Compared to iTunes DRMed video files, there are more options to remove DRM from iTunes music files such as protected AAC songs to iTunes plus upgrade, CD disk burning and ripping, re-match protected songs using iTunes Match, etc.

Anyway, hope this post can help you achieve the goal that editing your iTunes purchased videos & audios on Windows Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker, or Adobe Premiere Pro.
