With the popularization of iPhone in the world, almost everybody has one in hand. But different from traditional mobile phone, we can’t set our favorite MP3 as ringtones on iPhone, thus results one situation: many people use the same ringtones. Most people choose to change iPhone system file to replace the only file inner iPhone with some tools after jailbreak. However, such action will do harm for iOS, and users who not familiar with iPhone don’t know how to do it. Actually, to change ringtones of iPhone is very easy. In this article I will introduce how to make ringtones for iPhone with iTunes on the condition of not jailbreak.

As the ringtone of iPhone is in ‘m4r’ Format (this format is the same as AAC Format, they are just in different file extension), you have to convert the ringtone you want to AAC Format. The common ringtones we use is MP3 or WAV Format, so there is no problem to convert them to AAC Format. And it is also very simple to convert, because iTunes comes with such function itself.

Now let’s talk about how to use iTunes to make iPhone ringtones. We all know that iTunes provides us ringtones download service, but it will cost. So how can we convert the already-haved songs to “m4r” Format, and synchronize them to iPhone with iTunes? Just following the blow easy-to-go steps:

Step1: Launch iTunes on your computer, then please go to “Edit -> Preferences -> General”, and check Tones item to let it show on the left file list, and select tones to add to database.

Step2: Right click the song you want to make into ringtone and select “Get Info” option. Go to the “Options” tab, and type the start&stop time you want into the box of “Start Time” and “Stop Time” (the length of the tone should be limited within 40 seconds), then click “OK”. This step is to create a ringtone, if you have made one, you can bypass it and begin to convert directly.

Step3: Right click the same song, and select “Create AAC Vision”. And the new clip song will appear blew the original one in your iTunes Library.

Step4: Right click the new created song, select “Show in Windows Explorer”, and change the “m4a” format to “m4r”, then click “Yes” on the pop-up dialog box. Thus the ringtone is made.

Step5: Open “iPhone” in the “Device”, select the “Tones” tab, under the Tones section, select “Sync All Tones” or “Checked Tones”, then return to the main interface of iTunes, click “Sync” button which is at the bottom of it. After finish it, the ringtone made by yourself has been synchronized in your iPhone.

When you have done all the steps above, you can go to Settings> Sounds> Ringtone and select your new ringtone. Many people may confuse about how to set particular ringtones for different contacts. It is easy to set, just check the contact you want, and click “Edit” on the top right, then tap on the Ringtone, you can choose a special ringtone for a person and tap on the Save button at the top right of the screen. However, if you want to set for multiple people, you do have to set one by one, this may cost you much time.

In addition, if you don’t want to use iTunes, here is some free software to make iPhone ringtones: iRinger, ToneShop, iPhone Explorer for Windows; GarageBand, Ringtonesia, iPhone Ringtone Maker for Mac.
