The features of digital information determine that there has to be a sort of unique technique, which is used to strengthen the protection for the copyright of digital audio & video contents, so DRM (digital right management) is born at the right moment.

DRM technology is sophisticated but quite advanced, and it regulates consumer’s usage of any forms of digital content such as software, music, movies, audio books, photos, etc. By DRM, the copy right holders can restrict consumers to copy digital contents as well as prohibit these contents from being watched, printed and altered on their unauthorized devices. Additionally, DRM can trace the number of playing music even the place in which it is played via network.

The DRM technology working principle is to first establish a digital program authorization center, and then encode compressed digital content using the "licensed encryption key" (intricate mathematical code) to encrypt the file, and the Key ID and the URL of the authorization center are stored in the head of the encrypted file. When the consumer demand, the digital program authorization center will send the relevant key to unlock the encrypted file after verification and authorization in accordance with the Key ID and the URL, and then the program can be played.

Generally there are two kinds of keys, one is "public key", the other is "private key". The "public key" is applied for encrypting program, while the "private key" is for decrypting.

However, this method to encrypt has an obvious bug, which fails to guarantee the actual copyright interests of the program providers, since the private key might probably be intercepted by hackers when sending to users. Moreover, instead of doing little on protection for the copyright, DRM brings lots of inconvenience to consumers. Ever since DRM is applied, consumers couldn’t play his purchased music or movies wherever he would like to. If you update your portable media devices or computer, maybe the videos or audios will be locked again. The videos or audios that you bought from different online stores such as iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Yahoo etc. couldn’t play together compatibly due to the DRM restrictions. Or it’s more difficult to share these music or movies with your family members or friends. Therefore, someone even regards DRM as a new hegemony in digitization era, which means it deprives people’s freedom. If you’ve been so fed with the tortures from the DRM, you can turn to this DRM stripping program which enables you to get rid of the DRM included in your purchased movies and music easily.
