Which Video & Audio Formats Does iTunes Support?

“I just downloaded the iTunes program, but when I tried to import two videos (one is .rmvb and the other is .avi) to iTunes library, no file appeared in the library. I guess it might be that iTunes is incompatible with the .rmvb and .avi formats. Which whizz can tell me which video and audio formats does iTunes support?”

Currently iTunes 11 supports H.264 and MPEG video files (in M4V, MP4 and MOV containers). In addition, in Apple’s official site, I notice that the AVI format encoded with M-JPEG can be played on iPads, but I’m not sure this sort of AVIs can be read by iTunes because I don’t have such AVI (M-JPEG) files to test.

For audio format, iTunes 11 can read, write and convert among MP3, WAV, MPEG-4, AIFF, AAC and Apple Lossless. iTunes is also able to play the DRM-covered audiobooks (.M4B/.AA/.AAX) purchased from the Audible website and iTunes Store. To listen other audio files using iTunes, such as the OGG file encoded with Vorbis or Speex, you will need to install the Xiph QuickTime plug-in. Furthermore, the Windows version of iTunes can re-encode the DRM-Free WMA audios automatically before playing them, but it does not have the ability to re-encode the DRM-protected WMAs.

Tip1: If your local hard drive stores some iTunes-incompatible videos (movies) and songs whose file extensions are .rmvb, .avi, .wmv, .mkv, .3gp, .flv, .vob (DVD digital copies), .wma, .flac, or others, here’s an unique media file converter named Aimersoft DRM Media Converter that can convert such media files to the correct formats for iTunes. Additionally, from this program’s name you guess that it might have the DRM removal feature, you are right, this program also enables you to re-encode DRM-protected WMAs/WMVs for playback on iPad, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, etc.

Tip2: If you wish to get movies on physical DVD discs to iTunes, iPad, iPhone, etc. for playing, the Aimersoft DVD Ripper, which features copyright DVDs decryption and video conversion, will help you get this job done.
