The newest iPad (4th generation) comes with a 9.7-inch retina display shipping 2048 x 1536 pixels at 264 ppi, and this makes the movie viewing effect more splendid. The video player apps below are all, as it were, sharp weapons for decoding standard-definition and HD-definition videos on iPad, most importantly, they are totally free. Welcome everyone to choose according to demand. BTW, if you have some DRM-protected WMV movies or DVD movies and wish to put them onto your iPad, you may refer to the two articles, "converting any WMVs for iPad" and "DVD to iPad 4th generation ripping guide".

VLC for iOS 2.0 (VideoLAN)

The well-known free VLC media player finally returns to App Store today after being thrown out due to licensing incompatibilities in 2011. The newest VLC for iOS 2.0 can play media files in almost all file formats without having to re-encode on iPads running iOS 5.1 or later, and it handles MKV files containing multiple audio and subtitle tracks fine on iPad. This app features a passcode-locking media library, and allows you to upload media files via WiFi and Dropbox sync. VLC for iOS 2.0 also lets you stream videos from computer to iPad using HLS, MMS or RTSP protocols. The disadvantage of this player app is that its HD video decoding ability is not good. The playback of 720P MKVs or 1080P M2TSs is quite not smooth, and sometimes it plays with sound and no picture (a black screen).

HD Player (Khoa Tran Anh)

The VLC for iOS 2.0 can’t deal with the High-Def videos well on iPad, but the HD Player by Khoa Tran Anh can. Thanks to the help of hardware-accelerated H264 decoder, the HD Player can effectively play 720p/1080p H.264-encoded MKV, FLV, MOV movies without any lags on iPad. If your iPad has a dual core processor, you will get more smooth movie viewing experience because this app supports multi-core decoding. The HD Player by Khoa Tran Anh can also stream video to iPad over local network or internet, and supports TV output, SSA subtitle, normal/repeat/shuffle video playing modes, video playlist management, passcode protection, video playback resuming, etc.

QQPlayer (Shenzhen Tencent Company)

QQPlayer is an all-format video player running on iPad. Original intelligent decoding mode (hard and soft) switch techonolgy lets you deeply dig the video playing potential of your iPad. This app supports almost all the mainstream video file formats like AVI, MKV, WMV, MP4, FLV, ASF, MPEG, etc. and supports embedded subtitles and external subtitles such as SRT, SMI … You are allowed to transfer videos and subtitles from computer to iPad via Wi-Fi. The best thing I like in this player is that it can steadily play both Standard-Def videos and High-Def videos on my iPad without lag.

OPlayerHD Lite (olimsoft)

If you need a free media player which gives you many ways to place video and music files into your iPad, OPlayer HD Lite may be a good pick. OPlayerHD Lite allows you to easily upload videos using iTunes File Sharing feature or the web browser (Wi-Fi upload). If you keep a lot of media files on an FTP server or an SAMBA server, you can download them into your iPad by using the built-in FTP or SAMBA client. This app also supports Dropbox sync and video streaming via HTTP/RTSP/MMS/FTP/SAMBA protocols. The file formats this player app supports include standard-definition MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, FLV, etc., high-definition H.264, MKV, TS, M2TS, etc., audio formats like MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, etc., and subtitle file formats like SMI, ASS, SUB, SRT, TXT … By the way, only 720P MKV files are supported, if your MKV are 1080P, you will need to convert them to 720P first.

VM Player HD Lite (Vetar Private Enterprise)

VM Player HD Lite is another free quality video player app. This app well supports both iPad local video files playback and streamed video files playback. You can add videos into this player using iTunes file transfer, SMB network, FTP, and UPnP/DLNA. One of the most interesting features of VM Player HD Lite is that you can effortlessly share videos onto Facebook or Twitter by simply tapping the “Share” option. VM Player HD Lite supports a wide variety of video files, audio files and subtitle files. The drawback of this app is that it updates extremely slow.

Air Playit HD (Han Zhicai)

The developers of Air Playit HD put forward the tagline for this app, “Streaming Video Music to iPad. Access Your Video & Music Library Anywhere ”, when they released it. They are not kidding. With this app, you can easily stream 720p/1080p/1080i HD videos, regular videos and audios from your computer to your iPad over local/remote Wi-Fi or 3G/4G network. Just set up your computer as a server through downloading & installing the Air Playit Server onto your computer, select the folders which contain your video and audio files and set them as network shared folders, then you can use the app on your iPad to access the contents in these shared folders over your network. It should be noticed that because Air Playit server only uses CPU to bear all the video transcoding and compressing works, if the configuration of your computer is too low, it will easily get stuck.
